A CURRENT OVERVIEW OF THE MUKBANG.

REAL INFLUENCERS:

Mukbang online videos are a product of the YouTube generation and the ever-growing foodie movement.

It originated in 2009 on South Korean television to deviate from the traditional eating/dinning  etiquette associated with it's culture.

I was introduced to it in 2015 from a Vice Media story and was quickly fascinated by this trend and how popular it was becoming.

A mukbang video goes beyond watching Guy Fieri eating a cheeseburger or Action Bronson having psychedelic moments while having pasta at Marea.

You are watching someone eating a ton of food along with the ASMR sounds- autonomous meridian response.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before 'Merica caught on to this.

America's biggest Mukbang star to date....Mr. Avocado

LA's Zach Choi is actually making some solid videos.

BUT THE EAST SIDE STILL HAS US BEAT!

In the end it's still a gorge fest at best with little emphasis on the quality of food but these folks are racking up millions of views. Which if you think about it, also deviates viewers from traditional forms of content. Meaning they aren't watching the Food Network or even MTV, but continuous videos on YouTube.

I do my own in person/private version of Mukbang in which you take me out to lunch here in Los Angeles and watch me eat. Tacos are preferred. :)
