JET BLACK HAIR AND BAD POSTURE
From roughly 1995-2005 there was a golden era of the punk sub-genere know as emotional hardcore aka Emo.
I'll avoid diving into the whole history of this for now and just focus on one specific band, Further Seems Forever from South Florida.
FSF really is a collective of musicians but it's most famous member is lead singer Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional. He left the band to pursue DC, but right before he left the band released one of the most iconic emo albums of all time, The Moon Is Down.
When purists talk about emo records that actually incorporate hardcore/post-hardcore elements, this nails it. From the beginning to end, almost every track is a sing-a-long especially "The Bradley" and "Pictures of Shorelines." For a music video, they opted for the semi-ballad "Snowbirds and Townies" which was shot in their hometown of Pompano Beach/Fort Lauderdale, FL.
As someone who grew up in the area and was part of the local scene, this music video captures everything about that era. It's also everything a 2000s emo video should be.
The principal male in the video is Jason Gleason who would go on to replace Carrabba in FSF, so the band could tour/promote the record. His outfit includes a Hot Rod Circuit t-shirt, studded belt, piercings and some ink. A sign of the time is he's listening to The Moon Is Down on a portable cd player and wearing a random messenger bag probably to hold his notebook to write his thoughts.
For the principle female, we have Crissie Verhagen, who was the lead singer in the band Element 101.
From there you have a typical story about young love and two people trying to connect with each other.
Of course there's a vintage car, you can't shoot a music video with a Ford Fiesta or Hyundai Sonata.
Since it's in Fort Lauderdale, most of the video is filmed by the beach and on an pier. From there, that's it, your only other scouting locations are shopping malls, strip malls, and swamps. Of course they did a shot of the band loading into the old FUBAR, which was a great venue.
When I watch this video, it just reminds of a different time. Before social media, our jeans getting skinnier, and when things felt a little more (YEP I'M ABOUT TO SAY IT) organic in the scene.
It's the most ultimate EMO video ever made, because it feels 100% genuine and exemplifies what an actual emo song was during that time. This was a piece of South Florida punk rock in it's true form. ENJOY!

I know many people who have cried to this record.
